Chapter 6. Management Tools and Toolkits

After your directory server is installed and configured as described in Chapter 4 "Deploying Solaris OE LDAP Naming Services," you need to start managing your directory data. A variety of tools and toolkits are available for this purpose.

The good news about tools and techniques to manage LDAP directories is that there are so many to choose from. The bad news is that because there are so many, you have the daunting task of having to determine which tools are best suited for your environment. The tools you choose depends on a variety of factors. These include:

  • System administrator's level of experience

  • Frequency of tasks

  • Uniqueness of your environment

  • Availability of tool developers

To know what tools are the right fit, you need to know the capabilities and limitations of each tool. To present this information in a manageable fashion, this chapter presents the tools in the following categories:

  • "Command-Line Tools" on page 348

    • "Standard LDAP Utilities" on page 348

    • "Specific Tools for the Secured LDAP Client" on page 353

    • "Other LDAP-Aware Commands" on page 359

    • "Tricks and Tips Using LDAP Commands" on page 359

    • "Sun ONE Directory Server Administration Tools" on page 361

  • "GUI-based Tools" on page 364

    • "Sun ONE Directory Console" on page 364

    • "Sun Management Console" on page 369

    • "LDAP Browser/Editor (LBE)" on page 373

  • "Toolkits and LDAP APIs" on page 377

    • "PerLDAP" on page 377

    • "Using the JDGW" on page 386

    • "Creating a Program With the LDAP SDK for Java" on page 393
