Exam Essentials

Understand the design benefits and uses of VLSM. VLSM allows for summarized routes, which reduce route table sizes. Hierarchical design is possible with VLSM, which supports discontiguous subnets and streamlined, simplified access lists, making for a more efficient, easier to troubleshoot network.

Know the benefits and advantages of private IP addresses. Private IP addressing includes the Class A network 10.0.0.0/8, the Class B network 172.16.0.0/12, and the Class C network 192.168.0.0/16. With IP version 4 address depletion, private IP addresses allow the network designer the flexibility to number all networks and hosts. Private IP addressing also minimizes the cost, public exposure, and security of your networks.

Remember the design advantages of NAT. NAT is a design solution to a depleted IP version 4 address space, which minimizes the cost of public IP addresses and adds the security of private addresses.

Understand the configuration requirements of DHCP and client addressing. DHCP provides IP addresses to clients and allows for centralized management with changes. Using the ip helper-address command to configure IP helper addresses on a Cisco router, the network designer can provide DHCP addressing to all clients regardless of the network topology.

Know the parts of an IP version 6 address and assignments. IP version 6 addresses are 128 bits in length and written in hexadecimal for display purposes. The first 80 bits define the network and subnet, and the final 48 bits represent the node on the network. The address 0:0:0:0:0:0:0:1 is the node’s loopback address, and FEDC:BA98:7654:3210:FEDC:BA98:7654:3210 is an example of an address with a network portion of FEDC:BA98:7654:3210:FEDC and a node address of BA98:7654:3210.

Identify the importance of network naming standards. Network naming standards allow the network designer to use a hierarchical naming convention that allows for correct identification and aids network troubleshooters. Descriptive and meaningful names minimize the learning curve and maintenance for users and administrators.
