"Groupware handles three kinds of user interaction ”the "three C's":
Communication ” which generally means e-mail and related functions.
Collaboration ” online discussion groups and common access to shared folders of shared data.
Coordination ” the most complex part, which allows workers to jointly accomplish specific procedures and tasks .
Lotus Notes combines all three aspects of groupware into one product, and has been elegantly designed to do so from day one. It includes e-mail, a database, a directory of users, security, tools to program custom applications, and support for remote access from portable computers."

Domino 6 includes many new features to the Domino messaging and collaboration server, whichsignificantly improves the benefits of having a combined WebSphere and Domino system. The features discussed in this chapter reflect features through Domino 6.5, which was the latest version of Domino at the publication of this book. Many Lotus Collaboration tools are based on the Domino server ”so even if you're going to use the WebSphere Portal as your launching point to Lotus Collaboration tools, a Domino server will usually need to be in the mix. See Appendix E on the WebSphere Portal for details on how the Domino server combines with the WebSphere Portal to provide a wide range of Lotus Collaboration tools. If you are a Domino developer, then you may want to skip this chapter because it is a discussion of the significant features of Domino 6 that will already be familiar to you.
