Document and Object Functions

Document settings

InDesign CS lets you create predefined document types, called document styles, to supplement the standard ones such as Letter in the New Document dialog box. You can also create these by editing the New Doc Sizes.txt file, which you can also use to share these document styles with others.

InDesign CS documents can now have bleed and slug areas. Bleed areas ensure that objects that run past the page boundaries have sufficient imaging area to print to, while slug areas ensure that there is room in the output for the printer's marks.

If you select a reference point in the Transform pane or Control palette with no object selected, that reference point is retained. When you next create a new document, that new reference will be used. Earlier versions of InDesign always reverted to the center point as the default reference point.

Page actions

In previous versions of InDesign, if you added or removed an odd number of pages from a facing-pages document, all pages after the new or deleted pages changed sides: Even pages got bumped to become odd pages, and odd pages got bumped to become even pages. This wreaked havoc with page designs. For example, a two-page opening spread for a magazine article could get split so that the original left-hand page is on the right and the original right-hand page gets bumped to the next (left-hand) page. But InDesign CS fixes that pages are automatically changed from left-hand pages to right-hand pages, and vice versa, as needed when individual pages are added and removed in a facing -pages document.

The ability to drag-copy pages or spreads from one document to another is new to InDesign CS. Any associated master pages are copied as well.

The Override All Master Pages function in the Pages pane's palette menu is new to InDesign CS. It moves all master items to the document page on the selected pages, so any local changes to the selected pages override the master page settings.

Libraries and books

When you close a palette containing library panes, all libraries in the palette are now closed. Similarly, when you close a palette containing book panes, all books in the palette are now closed.

Multiple users may now open a library as long as the file is locked via Mac OS X's Show Info feature's Locked option or via the Windows Properties feature's read-only option.

File exchange

The new InDesign Interchange format lets users of InDesign 2 read InDesign CS (version 3) files if they acquire the Interchange plug-in for InDesign 2. You cannot otherwise downsave to earlier versions of InDesign.

Object selection

InDesign CS adds the Select submenu, which provides new controls for object selection, to the Object menu. You can select the contents, the frame, the next object in a group, or the previous object in a group .
