Companion CD Installation and Patches (All Platforms)

The Oracle Database 10g companion CD has additional products that are not in the primary CD or download file. You can download this disk as mentioned before or use available media from Oracle. The products in this disk should be installed into a different ORACLE_HOME from the one used for the database.

For more details on installation requirements for Oracle HTTP Server, Oracle HTML DB, Operating System, and Service Pack, please refer to the platform-specific Oracle Database Companion CD Installation Guide.

The Oracle Database 10g companion CD offers two types of installations: Oracle Database 10g Products and Oracle Database 10g Companion Products. If you install Oracle Database 10g Products, OUI will install all available products with it. Follow the instructions in the Oracle Database Companion CD Installation Guide for your choice of installation.

Oracle Corporation highly recommends applying the latest patch-set release (if any) after installing the Oracle Companion CD products. Oracle has started a quarterly schedule for patches since January 2005; register and use Oracle MetaLink (http://metalink.oracle.com) to get patches.

Manual Database Installation Steps

The manual database-creation process has a few steps similar to database cloning, which is discussed in the next section:

1.

Create an init<SID>.ora in your $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory in UNIX or in your $ORACLE_HOME\database directory for Windows. You can make a copy of the sample init.ora to init<SID>.ora and alter the copied file to have new database parameters, filenames, and sizes.

2.

Log in to the database as SYS and start up the database in NOMOUNT mode.

3.

Create the database using the database creation script (similar to clone_db.sql). Run additional scripts to create SYSAUX, temporary tablespaces, users, and so on.

4.

Run the necessary scripts (catalog.sql and catproc.sql) to build views, synonyms, and so on.
