8. CMMI was the result of overwhelming demand across the industry.

5. There are fewer procedures to write in the CMMI than in the CMM.

Ha ha! Big laugh there. The CMM specifically called out the term "according to a documented procedure." However, those of you who have done process improvement have noticed that, just because the CMM did not specifically call out the use of a procedure, one was often required to enlighten staff as to how to perform a function, and how to perform that function consistently within a project or across many projects. The phrase "according to a documented procedure" is rarely, if ever, used in the CMMI. However, if you read what constitutes a "plan" in the CMMI, you will find that it includes a process description. So, just because the CMMI does not specifically reference the term "procedures," it does not mean that there do not need to be any. We also have found that most of the procedures an organization writes relate to how to implement the practices and subpractices within the process areas. Well, just looking at the CMMI demonstrates that there are an awful lot of process areas and practices included. So you better get cracking on those procedures.
