Most readers will come to this book with knowledge of the Capability Maturity Model (CMM), also known as the CMM for Software. So, to describe concepts within the CMMI, we will often compare the approaches taken in the CMMI to a similar topic in the CMM for Software. In some cases, we may describe the concept within the CMMI as it relates to other models, such as the Systems Engineering CMM (SE-CMM) or Systems Engineering Capability Model Electronic Industries Association (EIA) 731. But for the most part, we will stay within what some call the Family of CMMs. Some readers would, of course, want us to consider other models and evaluation approaches in our discussions, including, to name a few, the Software Development Capability Evaluation (SDCE), International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 9000, Six Sigma, etc.; however, that is not what this book is about.
