Summary

Team-Fly

This chapter discussed the basics of using data streams in Java-for reading and writing from data files, accessing Web pages through the Internet, and for developing of a client/server communication system through the use of sockets. When you know how to use streams in one of these instances, the others are quite simple because Java handles all streams in much the same way. The Java section of this book is meant to be an introduction to the language for those who want to use it with SAP. You are strongly encouraged to experiment with the various classes and methods that are introduced in this chapter. To become familiar with related methods and classes, look through the online help that is available with your Java development system.

Applets are a very common use for Java. With Java you can develop small applications that can run on any browser, regardless of operating system. This chapter covers the basics of applets, points out the differences between applets and full-blown Java applications, and discusses how applets can communicate with other programs.

Finally, this chapter also briefly introduced JavaBeans and ActiveX. These advanced topics are not crucial for an introduction to the Java language, but the basic concepts are good to know as you start to read and learn more about the Java language.

Taken as a whole, the information in this chapter will help you to build useful, full-fledged Java applications.
