Tips for Moving Many Users

Many GroupWise customers are consolidating GroupWise post offices. There are a few actions you should take to ensure that the move-user process goes successfully:

  • Make sure that QuickFinder Indexing is not scheduled to run while the user moves are happening. If needed, disable QuickFinder Indexing. Be sure to reenable it when the job is done.

  • Make sure that every POA has at least six TCP handler threads and six message handler threads configured, at minimum! If you have a small post office, you may wonder why you are told to break with the protocol of having half the number of message handler threads as TCP handler threads. The reason for this recommendation is that if the TCP handler threads or message handler threads become too busy, the whole move may stop for 12 hours. It's better to increase threads than to allow that to happen. When moving a big load of users, you might consider doubling both the TCP handler threads and the message handler threads on both POAs during the period you are moving users.

  • On the POA's Agent Settings screen, there's a Max Thread Usage or Priming and Moves option. The default is set to 20%, which is generally sufficient. But during the time that you are moving users, you should consider changing this valueperhaps to around 80%. Move this setting back down after the moves have completed.

  • Because you will likely be sending Mailbox/Library Maintenance/GWCheck jobs to the source POA, you should consider increasing the maintenance handler threads. If you do so, the Mailbox/Library Maintenance/GWCheck jobs will happen faster, unless your server's CPU is too slow to handle so many GWCheck threads at once. You can do this by going to the Maintenance property page of the destination POA. The default is four maintenance handler threads; the maximum is eight. Increase this number when performing maintenance on the users to be moved, and then lower the setting as needed after the user moves.

Follow these tips, and your user moves should go faster. The real keys to successful user moves include following the directions in the section "Moving a GroupWise User" and ensuring that the destination and source post offices have been maintained with schedule maintenance events all along.
