The Evolution of GroupWise

GroupWise 7 is a seventh-generation product. The original ancestor of GroupWise 7 was called WordPerfect Office 1.0. When Novell bought WordPerfect Corporation, and later sold it to Corel, Novell retained the GroupWise product line. Prior to GroupWise 7, there were seven revisions of GroupWise that are of interest in this book: GroupWise 4.1, GroupWise 5.0, GroupWise 5.2, GroupWise 5.5, GroupWise 5.5 Enhancement Pack, GroupWise 6, and GroupWise 6.5.

It's helpful to understand that GroupWise evolved from WordPerfect Office, because the current product retains some of the earlier naming conventions for files and directories. Anywhere you see WP or OF, you are looking at the legacy of WordPerfect Office:

  • WP: The GroupWise domain database is called WPDOMAIN.DB. You will also find WPHOST.DB, WPGATE, WPCSIN, and WPCSOUT.

  • OF: All GroupWise post offices have directories called OFUSER, OFFILES, and OFMSG.

The reason Novell retained the WordPerfect and Office naming conventions was to provide backward compatibility with older versions of GroupWise and WordPerfect Office. As new components have been added to GroupWise, the names of these components have followed the new GroupWise or Novell GroupWise names. For example:

  • GW: The name of a GroupWise domain dictionary file is GWDOM.DC. Look for GW in the names of GroupWise NetWare loadable modules too.

  • NGW: Every GroupWise post office has an important file called NGWGUARD.DB.
