Dedication

I dedicate this book to my wife Edith and daughters Klara and Marie-Sophie (who painted a lot of teddy bears on my manuscript), without whose understanding the writing of this book would not have been possible.

About the Author

Harald Kosch is an associate professor at the University of Klagenfurt. His domains of interest are distributed multimedia systems, multimedia databases, middleware, and Internet applications. He started research at the École Normale Supérieure in 1993 during postgraduate study and entered the Ph.D. program in 1994, obtaining his Ph.D. degree in June 1997. He actively participates in the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-7 and MPEG-21 standardization and is involved in several international research projects in the domain of distributed multimedia systems.

Acknowledgments

My thanks go to Mulugeta Libsie for constant support and for reviewing all chapters; László Böszörményi for his good examples, for correcting many errors, and for the constant encouragement. Equally, I thank Hermann Hellwagner for his corrections and improvement suggestions; Mario Döller for his proofreading and for our discussions on how to design a multimedia database; and Christian Timmerer from Klagenfurt and Jörg Heuer from Siemens CT for the common contributing work to the MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards.

I also thank my colleagues and friends at the Institute of Information Technology at the University Klagenfurt for their support during the writing of my habilitation thesis and this book.
