When you edit a mask, you aren't changing the actual image. You're changing the masking area or changing the degree of masking. You will select the areas you want to add or delete to the mask and then fill the selected areas with black or white.
Although you can use several of the tools, you might find that the Brush tool or the Preset Shape tool is the easiest tool to use to modify the masked area.
NOTE
If you are working on a background layer with a transparency, you don't need to select a color first. As you draw the additions to the mask, additional areas will become transparent.
For this example, star-shaped cutouts are added to the mask.
