If you're not using a .Mac account to sync your Address Book (and if that all sounds very foreign, then you're not), you'll definitely want to make a backup copy of your contacts just in case anything unspeakable happens to your Mac (from being dropped, stolen, confiscated by the FBI, or just a really nasty hard disk crash). And since backup is so incredibly simple, there's no excuse not tojust go under the File menu and choose Back Up Address Book. This exports a copy of your entire Address Book (you should then put this copy on a removable drive, burn it to a CD, email it to a close family member, etc.) just in case the unimaginable becomes manageable (that doesn't make much sense, but it would make a great tagline for a company: "We make the unimaginable manageable").
