CHECK THE SPELLING JUST WHEN YOU'RE DONE

If you need a little help with your spelling (as I do, just ask the platoon of editors who check my spelling), by default Mail checks your spelling as you go (underlining misspelled words in red), but if you find that underlining obtrusive, you can change it so it just checks the spelling oncewhen you hit Send. You do that by going to Mail's Preferences (found under the Mail menu), and when the Preferences panel appears, click on the Composing icon. In the Composing dialog you'll see a pop-up menu for checking your spelling. The default is set to check spelling "As I Type," but you can change it to "When I Click Send" if you want to check it once when you're done. When you choose this method, after you click Send it will highlight any misspelled words (and underline them in red), and a pop-up spell-checking window will display a Guess of the proper spelling.
