Summary

In this chapter, you've taken a look at how Flash and the browser can communicate with one another using loadVariables(), getURL(), and FSCommand(). In particular, you've learned how to make calls to functions that exist on the page in which the Flash movie is embedded with both getURL() and FSCommand(). You've also looked at how you can use the JavaScript methods of the <OBJECT> and <EMBED> tags to get the browser to communicate with Flash.

When communicating between the host application and Flash, just remember that there are always potential obstacles when depending on scripting languages in your browser. There's a chance that your users will have scripting support turned off in their browsers. You also need to be mindful of which browsers support which level of communication. As long as you recognize the limitations, you can use these techniques to expand the scope of your Flash application.
