Information technology has become one of the core components of many enterprises. It is even more essential for organizations engaged in the transition to globalization. Prior to incorporating information technology in business operations, identification of IT related issues and development of IT transition solutions are considered to be the preliminary tasks in enterprise global transition process.
This chapter discusses the development of global IT transition framework through the categorization of global IT transition classes:
Global IT infrastructure
Global business applications
Global telecommunication network
Data and information improvement and detailed investigation of related issues
The identification of global IT transition classes, together with their corresponding issues provide enterprises a conceptual vision of global IT architecture taxonomy and suggestions that might be considered in the development of global information systems.
To enhance the completeness of global IT transition process, the author suggests a future research direction in regard to the relationship between global IT transition classes and organizational transition scopes. The organizational transition scopes refer to intraorganizational scope and inter-organizational scope. Indeed an enterprise's global transition process involves business operations within the organization as well as external business parties. Hence, there is a need to incorporate both internal and external scopes in the process of globalization. Furthermore, components and requirement of each organizational scope in relation to global IT transition classes are needed to be identified in the future study.
