14.7 CREDITS AND SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER READING

The latest information regarding UML can be accessed through Object Management Group' web site http://www.omg.org. Another useful website for object-modeling related issues is http://www.rational.com. This one belongs to the Rational Software Corporation that has played a leading role in the standardization of tools for designing object based systems. This is also the homesite of the Rational Unified Process for the development of OO software. You also need to know about three people who have played a central role in the creation of UML and now RUP: Grady Booch, Jim Rumbaugh, and Ivar Jacobson. All three are with Rational Software Corporation.

This chapter presented only the more prominent diagrams used today for the modeling of object-oriented systems. UML defines a total of the 12 diagrams. Besides the seven presented in this chapter, UML defines the following additional diagrams: Object Diagram, Component Diagram, Deployment Diagram, Subsystems Diagram, and Models Diagram. The reader is referred to the official OMG site for information on these additional diagrams.

At the level of concepts, much of what was said in this chapter is a paraphrase of the book by Fowler and Scott [20]. The reader is referred to that book for more detailed presentations of the notions presented here. Another recommended on-line source of information is the UML tutorial at http://www.togethersoft.com.

The UML diagrams shown in this chapter, and also in the rest of the book, were made with the JVISION modeling tool available from http://www.object-insight.com.
