At this point, you have developed sound strategies for maintaining, backing up, and restoring SMS within your site. You have configured the database maintenance tasks and scheduled these tasks within appropriate time periods—daily, weekly, or monthly. You have established a regular backup plan that includes backing up not only the SMS database, but also the strategic files, folders, and registry keys contained on the site server. You have outlined and practiced recovery procedures to be followed in the event the SMS database server or site server fails or needs to be moved or a site system needs to be replaced.

Chapter 18 takes us a step further, as we explore maintenance and configuration from the point of view of SQL Server. These two chapters combined provide the groundwork necessary to keep your SMS site optimized and well-prepared should you ever encounter a recovery event.
