Chapter 17

Disaster recovery! Which of you never wants to experience it, but nevertheless needs to be prepared for the possibility? Presumably you all raised your hands. If you didn't, by the end of this chapter you will.

The key to a successful disaster recovery effort is, of course, a sound backup strategy. The focus of this chapter is just that—the establishment of a useful backup strategy and strategies for recovering your Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) database server, site server, and site systems. This chapter and Chapter 18, which focuses on database maintenance strategies, provide you with the resources you need to be amply prepared for disaster recovery, but more importantly, teach you how to avoid disaster in the first place.

We'll begin by establishing sound database maintenance practices, including a regular backup process, and then you'll learn how to recover or move the SMS database server, recover or move the SMS site server, and restore an SMS site system.
