Data Management Services

The data management services provide standard means for helping to manage the Grid Computing environment.

Grid File Transfer Protocol (GridFTP)

GridFTP is a standard extension to the normal FTP (File Transfer Protocol) that works with the Grid Computing data requirements. This is a high-performance, secure, reliable, data transfer protocol that is optimized for high bandwidth across wide area networks. This is a standard that provides GSI security, parallel transfer capabilities, and channel reusability.

Reliable File Transfer (RFT)

The reliable file transfer service (RFT) is an OGSA-based service that provides interfaces for controlling and monitoring third-party file transfers using the GridFTP servers. The client controlling the transfer is hosted inside of a grid service so that it can then be managed using the soft state model, and queried using the service data interfaces available to all grid services.

Replica Location Service (RLS)

The replica location service (RLS) maintains and provides access to mapping information from logical names regarding data items to target names. These target names may represent physical locations of data items, or an entry in the RLS may map to another level of logical naming for the data item.

Summary

We summarize the data management services discussion by simply addressing their usability, which enables:

  • Computational grids to manage a job by allowing the data required for the processing of the job to be transferred in a secure, reliable manner.

  • Data grids to utilize these management features providing scalable and secure access and integration facilities for data storage.
