Final Thoughts

In this chapter you have added to your experience in basic page layout skills using InDesign CS 2. These two projects stepped you through basic construction and text formatting, as well as enhanced creative features.

Here are some important concepts to keep in mind:

  • Producing an ad for placement in a commercially produced circular requires you to plan for the production specifications of the magazine or newspaper and for the circulation of your ad.

  • Remember that more and more publications have moved to a PDF/X-1a standard for submission. You will see this become commonplace.

  • I've introduced some additional production choices for your poster workoffset, screen, and digitaldepending on how many you need, what type of substrate and ink are appropriate for the environment, and how the finished poster will be displayed.

  • Transparency was introduced in this chapter, in a very basic way, to get your feet wet. We experimented with some transparency control. A wonderful effect, it has specific production considerations to achieve the best printed outcome.

  • Raster basics and the importance of following a simple formula were introduced. Understanding resolution and scaling of raster images is essential to print production.
