PDF (Portable Document Format) has become a standard in the way that people send and view documents. It's a universal file format, created by Adobe Systems, that preserves the fonts and formatting of a document. Let's say I had a news-letter that I created in Microsoft Word, filled with formatting like color and pictures. If I sent you that document and you didn't have Word, you wouldn't be able to view it properly. If the newsletter had been published to PDF, anyone with a free PDF viewer could open it with all the formatting intact.
