Tuning Alerts

Alerts can generate a lot of "noise." I define "noise" in the MOM context as when a batch of alerts is generated and for some reason you wish not to be informed of them. If you have been using MOM, more than likely you have already suffered from "noise"; few systems are compliant with all of an MP's rules from the start!

Why would you wish not to be informed? Consider the following:

  • The alerts are a result of a non-critical rule.

  • A batch of alerts is generated as a result of a management pack install.

  • The alert's corresponding rule does not have parameter values that are acceptable to you, including the polling interval.

  • You are receiving multiple alerts for the same issue.

  • The alert may be remedied without requiring notifying anyone.

Not only do extraneous alerts cause a false panic, but they also consume additional space in the OnePoint database, inflating your alert reporting. This following section covers Alert Tuning Solution Accelerator (ATSA) and tuning rules in the Administrator Console.
