Including Stop Words

Including 'Stop Words'

Google consolidates search strings by automatically eliminating certain pronouns, articles, and other short, common words. Or and and are examples of these so-called stop words. The exclusion of stop words keeps search results clean but is a frustration when you want those words included in the string and matched to a Web page.

The answer is to include search operators which treat all keywords equally. (Search operators are introduced in Chapter 2.) The preeminent operator for grouping keywords is the exact phrase operator, which uses quotation marks around a keyword string to match it exactly to text on Web pages. For example:

'bacon and eggs' 'smokey the bear' 'trick or treat'
Remember

The exact phrase operator goes beyond just forcing Google to accept stop words. The operator also forces Google to keep its hands off the search string entirely, matching the word order to Web text.
