Installing DNS on Your WS03 Server

Many, many different DNS servers are out there, and Windows can run lots of them. The server that comes with WS03 is Microsoft’s DNS server. DNS is not installed by default with WS03. Here’s how to install it:

  1. In the Control Panel, click to open the Add/Remove Programs window.

  2. Click Add/Remove Windows Components.

  3. Click Networking Services to highlight it, and then click Details.

  4. Check the box for Domain Name System (DNS).

  5. Click OK, and then click Next.

  6. Insert the CD, if prompted to do so.

  7. If you are using any DHCP-assigned IP addresses, you will be given an opportunity to change to a static IP.

  8. Click Finish, and you’re done.

    Note

Why do we want to use static IP addresses if we’re a DNS server? Because clients point to a DNS server by IP address. If the IP of the server changes, clients can’t find it anymore. You can also use DHCP client reservations for the server, so it still uses DHCP, but it always gets the same address.
