Find that Tune: Searching and Browsing

As your music library grows, you'll want to take advantage of the features iTunes provides for locating songs, artists, videos, podcasts, and albums.

With the iTunes Search box, you can quickly narrow down the list of songs displayed to only those songs that match the criterion you typed. You can narrow your searches to specific itemsfor example, podcasts, albums, or videosby using the search bar.

With the Browse button, you can quickly scan your music library by artist, album name, or genre.

And with the Show Song File command in the File menu, you can quickly display the actual disk file that corresponds to a given song in your library or in a playlist.

Find that Tune: Searching and Browsing

There may be times when you want to locate a song's disk file on your hard driveto back it up, for example, to move it to another drive, or to simply determine where it's stored.

To locate a song's disk file, select the song and choose Show Song File from the File menu (or press -R). iTunes switches you to the Finder, opens the folder containing the song, and highlights the song file.

Searching

To search your entire music library, be sure the Library item is selected in the Source list. To search a specific playlist, select that playlist's name. Then click within the Search box and begin typing.

Be More Specific: The Search Bar

When you perform a search, iTunes displays the Search bar, which lets you narrow down your search results.

Tip

Normally, the Search bar disappears when you remove the text from the Search box. But if you'd like to display the Search bar all the time, choose Show Search Bar from the Edit menu.
