Configuring a Message of the Day (MOTD) Banner

When configured, a message of the day (MOTD) banner displays a configured message to all connecting terminals. In this section, you will configure a MOTD banner on R1 that indicates which router you have connected tothat is, "This is Router 1." To do so, enter global configuration mode and issue the following command, followed by a delimiting character:

 Router#  banner motd   #

Example 6-3 demonstrates configuring the message of the day and using # as the delimiting character.

 Termserver  #1  [Resuming connection 1 to r1 ... ] R1>  enable  R1#  configure terminal  Enter configuration commands, one per line.  End with CNTL/Z. R1(config)#  banner motd   #  Enter TEXT message.  End with the character '#'. This is Router1  #  R1(config)# Termserver#  1

After issuing the banner motd command, you determine a delimiting character that Cisco IOS software will interpret to mean that you are finished with the banner. It is essential to choose a delimiting character that will not be in your message banner; otherwise , when you key the character as part of your message, Cisco IOS software will interpret the character to mean that you are finished with your message and will return you to global configuration mode. Example 6-2 uses # as the delimiting character, as highlighted.

Now exit global configuration mode and privileged EXEC mode. After exiting these modes, hit the Enter key. You should see the banner that you just configured. Example 6-4 demonstrates this process.
