Creating a Notebook File

Any Word document can be viewed in Notebook Layout view. The best way to use this feature, however, is to create a Word notebook file. This automatically formats the document for the Notebook Layout feature and displays it in Notebook Layout view.

You can also convert an existing document to Notebook Layout view. Doing so, however, may cause some of the document's formatting to be lost.

To create a Word notebook file

1.	Choose File > Project Gallery, or press to display the Project Gallery dialog.
2.	Click the New button near the top of the Project Gallery dialog to display New document options (Figure 2). Figure 2. You can use the Project Gallery dialog to create a new Word notebook file.
3.	In the Groups list, select Blank Documents.
4.	Select the Word Notebook icon.
5.	Click Open. Word creates a new document and displays it in Notebook Layout view (Figure 3). Figure 3. A blank Word notebook file.

Tip

• Another way to create a Word notebook file is to create a blank new document using any of the techniques covered in Chapter 2 and switch to Notebook Layout view (as discussed on the next page) before entering any text into the document.

To view any document in Notebook Layout view

1.	Open the document you want to view in Notebook Layout view (Figure 4). Figure 4. Here's an example of a document created with Outline view and viewed in Normal view.

3.	A dialog like the one in Figure 7 may appear. Click Convert to reformat the document for use with Notebook Layout view. Figure 7. Tip

• If you click Create New in step 3, Word creates a blank new document in Notebook Layout view (Figure 3).
