Set Up Accounts (Mac)

Let's set up your accounts in Quicken for Mac, including your main checking account, savings account, and a credit card account. If you have them, get the last paper statements from each of these accounts. If you don't have the statements, don't worry; you can make changes later.

If the Account List isn't open , display it by choosing Lists > Accounts, or by pressing Cmd-A. Then click the New button in the Account List. The New Account Assistant opens.

Let's add your main checking account. Type the first few letters of your bank's name to scroll the list of financial institutions, and then select your bank. If your bank isn't in the list, click This account is not held at one of the financial institutions listed above . Then click Continue. Quicken next asks if you want to set up your account online or manually. Click Manual, and then click Continue. (We'll cover setting up accounts for online access in Chapter 5.)

This screen shows the different kinds of accounts you can set up. Click Checking, and then click Continue. On the next screen, give the account a name. If it's going to be the only checking account, then the default name of Checking is fine. Otherwise, give it a more descriptive name, so you can tell the different checking accounts apart. Click Continue. On the next screen, enter the ending date from the last paper statement for the checking account and the ending balance, and then click Continue. Quicken displays the register for your new account, with the opening balance filled in.

Repeat this process for the rest of the checking, savings, and credit card accounts you want to set up.

As you finish setting up each account, it appears in the Account List, with the balance for all your accounts.
