Finishing Your Theme

 < Day Day Up >

So you've got your slide masters finished, your photo cutouts installed, your charts all set. You're almost done, but there are a few small things you can do to add that extra professional touch to your theme:

  • Set your table defaults. See Chapter 7 for information about creating a table to match your theme. Then follow the steps in Chapter 13 to lock down the default table settings for your theme, so that when the Table button is clicked in the toolbar the table you created is built automatically. Don't forget to set the font and font styles for the table.

  • Set the default style for free text boxes, shapes , and the Object Placeholder by following the steps in Chapter 13.

  • Don't forget to set the text style for your page numbers, even if they will be turned off by default on your master slides. Keynote 2 allows the user to turn on page numbers for each slide, so if you've forgotten to change the font or style to match your theme, it will show when the page number is turned on.

  • Because the file you are using to create your theme is (until you save it as a theme file) just a regular Keynote file, there is always a "regular" slide in the Slide Navigator under the bar marked "Slides." Set up this first slide as the preview image that will appear in the theme sheet ( Figure 14.28 ). Place the name of your theme on the slide and make it as large as you can since the preview that is built from it will only appear as a 120x90 pixel image in the theme sheet ( Figure 14.29 ).

Figure 14.29. Once you save your theme as a .kth file and install it, Keynote will use the preview slide you created as a thumbnail in the Themes sheet.

  • Create a .key file that contains objects filled with your colors or tiles so other users can copy their styles to their own objects.

  • Create a file of extra images that match your theme and can be pasted into a presentation. Doing this can take time, but it can add value to your theme, especially if you plan to sell it.

  • Create a full presentation of your theme before saving it. This is a good way to test it, and the presentation can be included as a sample file if you distribute it.
