Exporting Presentations as a Flash Movie

 < Day Day Up >

New to Keynote 2 is the ability to export files in Macromedia Flash format. This allows the presentation to be viewed in any Web browser that supports Flash (that is, virtually all browsers), as well as the Macromedia Flash Player 7. The presentation will appear in the Flash Player at full size, and will act as an interactive slideshow. Because the Flash format is a bit more efficient than Quick Time, the file size will be smaller. The drawback is that the presentation will not have the same fidelity as the QuickTime version. Slide builds will usually work fine, but Flash can't replicate all of Keynote's transitions correctly, embedded QuickTime movies won't play, and custom bullets will not appear the way they do in Keynote or QuickTime. Flash playback may be better in some situations, however, so it is an option you should consider.

To export a presentation as a Flash movie

1.
Open the Keynote file that you wish to export to Flash.

2.
Choose File > Export.

The Export sheet slides down from the top of the document window.

3.
Click Flash.

4.
Click Next.

A Save sheet appears, prompting you for the name of the exported Flash movie and where you want to put it on your hard disk.

5.
Click Export.

The Flash file is saved.

Tips

  • Make sure that you don't try to play back the Flash movie in the QuickTime Player or a Flash Player version before 7; you will not get a good result. These players will replace every space in your slide text with &20 , making slides unreadable. You can only play back exported presentations in Flash format with the Flash Player 7 or later.

  • You can download the latest version of the Flash Player from Macromedia, at www.macromedia.com/support/flash/downloads.html.

  • Keynote presentations that contain only vector drawings (not, for example, photographs) will export better to Flash, and the Flash movie will be scalable without loss of quality.

  • If Flash movies don't play with the same fidelity as QuickTime, you might be wondering why you would ever want to use them. Here are two reasons: first, you might be in a situation where you are required to produce Flash output, for use on the Web, for example, or so your pre sentation can be included in a larger Flash project. Second, Keynote is much less expensive than Macromedia Flash MX, so you can produce Flash output on the cheap.
