Chapter16.Basic and Advanced Frame Relay Configurations

Chapter 16. Basic and Advanced Frame Relay Configurations

The configuration options in Frame Relay are derived from the design and provisioning choices made in earlier phases of Frame Relay service. In the configuration phase, it is preferable to apply a Hub/Spoke topology, as described in Chapter 15, "Frame Relay Design Solutions," which is more suitable to the permanent nature of Frame Relay. This chapter provides detailed information about basic and advanced configurations in Cisco Frame Relay routers. The Frame Relay encapsulations (cisco, ietf), DLCI encapsulations (cisco, ietf, ppp, and protocol) and LMI types (cisco, ANSI, and q933a) will not be discussed here. Cisco.com provides detailed information about these topics. This chapter includes two main sections:

  • Basic Frame Relay configurations:

    - Point-to-multipoint configurations

    - Point-to-point configurations, their hub side and spoke side

    - Minimum data-link connection identifier (DLCI) recommendationsFrame Relay and the chosen routing protocols

    - The Frame Relay broadcast queue

  • The advanced configuration sections include the following:

    - Configuring IP unnumbered Frame Relay

    - Frame switching configuration

    - ISDN as Frame Relay backup configuration, based on dialer profiles and Hot Standby Router Protocol (HSRP) and Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (EIGRP)

    - Frame Relay bridging

    - Frame Relay compression, including header compression, per-virtual circuit compression, and hardware compression

    - Frame Relay and IP multicast configuration

    - Frame Relay and traffic shaping with generic traffic shaping, traffic shaping classes, and foresight adaptive shaping with Enhanced Local Management Interface (ELMI)
