Summary

This chapter explored myriad performance and tuning possibilities and options. It goes without saying that although you've explored many options and optimization approaches in this chapter, you need to plan, model, and test your proposed optimization and setting changes carefully .

Too often I've see environments where systems managers have had the right intentions to optimize their environment, but the sizing and proper modeling has left them short on results. In the worst case, your performance can actually decrease in some cases. Classic examples of this are the JVM settings that you explored several pages back. Therefore, use the options and approaches in this chapter in conjunction with an overall methodology such as one discussed in Chapter 1.
