Summary

In this chapter, you saw a diverse range of potential topological architectures that will work well with WebSphere. Although this list was by no means exhaustive, it should provide you with a solid starting point in understanding how modular WebSphere is.

Modularity and the ability to compartmentalize help the areas of redundancy and performance. The side effect of this is that you inherently obtain scalability from the distributed nature of the platform.

I presented many rules of thumb and common practices in this chapter, but nothing is as valuable as solid design and capacity modeling. The number of times I've seen applications designed around infrastructure that was previously decommissioned is astonishing. Identify and design what you need, and then model your topology.
