Overall Conclusions

While the overall pattern of research results points to the importance of the six factors, the impact of each factor on productivity varied considerably from study to study. This variation is evidence that context matters. That is, the impact of a human capital practice on productivity will depend on what other practices are in place as well as how well the practice fits the business strategy and environment. Interestingly, the productivity driver with the most variable effects on productivity is Rewards.

Complementarities

Complementarities exist when the two or more drivers in combination affect productivity more than would be anticipated by “adding up” the expected effects of each component driver. For example, research shows that the productivity gains from a combination of highly selective hiring and heavy investment in training is greater than the expected sum of the gains from either practice on its own.
