With very few exceptions, PDF documents are created with one of three final types of output in mind: They are viewed on the web, printed to a laser printer or other standard business printer, or sent out to a commercial print shop for professional printing. In the first two cases, you generally don't have to check for potential problems or alter any settings. Due to the time and expense involved in sending files out to be commercially printed, however, it is recommended that you preflight any PDF documents intended for commercial printing. Preflighting is the process of checking your document for suitability with a particular printer or output process. See 66 About Preflighting and 67 Preflight a PDF for more information about preflighting.

KEY TERM

Preflighting The process of checking your document for suitability with a particular printer or output process.

In addition to preflighting, Acrobat also includes other tools to help ensure that your PDF document prints successfully. These include trapping, transparency flattening preview, and the PDF Optimizer, all of which are discussed in this chapter.
