Chapter 11. Accessibility for the Disabled

IN THIS CHAPTER:

60 Create an Accessible PDF

61 Have Acrobat Read a Document Aloud

62 Change Display Settings for Increased Legibility

63 Set Automatic Scrolling

KEY TERM

Accessibility When used to refer to PDF files, it means document accessibility for vision- or motion-impaired users.

With version 7, Adobe Acrobat has gone a step further in making PDF documents accessible to those with vision and mobility impairments. Adobe has created two ways of addressing accessibility . The first way is by enabling the author of a PDF to create an accessible PDF or to change an existing PDF to make it accessible. The second way of addressing accessibility is to make navigation and PDF viewing easier for those with disabilities . By changing the view preferences, scrolling options, and Read Out Loud command, authors can make their PDFs more accommodating and in line with government standards.

TIP

With Acrobat 7's new wizard system, setting up a PDF to be accessible is a breeze . From the Advanced menu, select Accessibility, Setup Assistant . Acrobat walks you step-by-step through the process of creating an accessible document.

NOTE

Acrobat 7 now allows you to save a PDF and print it to a Braille printer. Under File , select the Save As command. From the Save As Type drop-down menu, select Text (Accessible) ; then click the OK button. Acrobat saves the PDF in a format using a Braille translation application.
