Digital editions , also known as eBooks , are electronic books that can be downloaded and read on a computer, a laptop, a dedicated eBook reader, or even a personal digital assistant (PDA). By using Adobe's Portable Document Format (PDF), digital editions have captured the look and feel of a real book by preserving the fonts, graphics, and layout of the actual pages from that book.

KEY TERMS

eBook This is the traditional term for digital editions.

Purchasing digital editions has many advantages over buying a traditional book, such as not having to worry whether a book is in stock or having to wait days for it to be delivered. Delivery of a digital edition is immediate. Another advantage to digital editions is portability. Unlike physical books, which can be quite large and cumbersome to transport, you simply download a digital edition to your laptop or PDA and take it with you. Finally, digital editions can be interactive. You can click a link that takes you to the Web for further information or even look up the meaning of unfamiliar words.
