Section 73. About PDF Optimizer

73. About PDF Optimizer

NOTE

Exercise caution when compressing images in documents that will be output to commercial printers because some compression methods can make an image unusable in certain print production work flows. Never save an optimized PDF document over the original, unless you are certain that the document does not contain any problematic image compression. You should always talk to your print professional before optimizing any PDF documents you will be sending them.

PDF Optimizer is a feature that can produce smaller and more efficient PDF documents. Unnecessary fonts are unembedded; images are compressed; and extraneous PDF objects, such as embedded thumbnails, hidden layers , and external cross references, are removed.

The PDF Optimizer.

From the Advanced menu, select the PDF Optimizer command to open the PDF Optimizer dialog box. The top of the dialog box contains a drop-down list of presets that you can select from, Delete and Save buttons , and an Audit Space Usage button. The Delete button is active if you have a custom preset selected and can be used to delete the selected preset. The Save button is activated as soon as you make any change to an existing preset. Clicking this button lets you save the current settings as a new preset. The Audit Space Usage button produces a report of the bytes used and the percentage of total file size for various document elements, such as bookmarks, fonts, comments, and extended graphics states. This information can lead you to areas where optimization will yield the best results.

The rest of the dialog box consists of a list of six categories and options for each category, as follows :

  • Images Contains options for down sampling; compression type; and compression quality for color , grayscale, and monochrome images

  • Scanned Pages Lets you balance compression versus image quality as well as apply various graphical filters

  • Fonts Lets you unembed specific fonts, such as system fonts or fonts you know the user has installed on her computer

  • Transparency Enables you to flatten transparency in the document and set flattening options

  • Discard Objects Provides a list of objects to discard from the document

  • Clean Up Contains miscellaneous optimization settings
