Windows NT releases have shown a steady progression of new storage- related features. Windows 2000 introduced dynamic disks that allow file system volumes to be managed online without application access to the volume being interrupted .
NTFS is a rich file system that added more features with Windows 2000. NTFS volumes can now be encrypted, thus preventing unauthorized access even when the disk volume is accessed via a different file system. Another notable feature is the change log journal that allows storage applications such as a replication agent or a Hierarchical Storage Management application to quickly and efficiently identify all files and directories that have been changed. NTFS in Windows 2000 also implements reparse points, a feature that forms the basis for implementing Hierarchical Storage Management, symbolic links, volume mount points, and Single Instance Storage.
SAN file systems offer several advantages in a SAN environment. Some vendors have implemented a SAN file system in the Windows NT environment using a centralized metadata server approach.
