Understanding the PowerPoint Views

When you first start PowerPoint, the application automatically displays Normal view in the center panel, with the Outline and Slide pane off to the left, and the Notes pane at the bottom of the display. PowerPoint includes three different views that you ll use for different tasks , depending on what you re trying to accomplish. The View controls, located in the bottom left side of the PowerPoint window (in the Outline And Slides pane) enable you to switch to these different views quickly. Table 10-1 introduces the different views you ll use in PowerPoint and tells you a little bit about each one.

To Master or Not to Master

If you re simply planning to create a quick and easy presentation, you might not want to worry about master pages. A master page is a page that works in the background of the slide, controlling such details as the format of headers and footers, the placement of slide numbers , the selection of a color scheme, background images or graphics used throughout the presentation, and so on. For longer presentations, or presentation styles you plan to use again, however, master pages can be great time-savers.

PowerPoint offers you three kinds of masters: A Slide Master, which controls format settings for individual slides; a Handout Master, which sets up the format of the handouts you create and print; and a Notes Master, which tracks the styles in effect for notes included with your presentation.

To create any of these masters, choose Master from the View menu, and then click the type of master you want to create. You are taken to the master page, where you can change the text style, insert a new master page, change the master layout, and modify the slide number, date, and footer information.
