Almost all books have headers and footers. Reading them is one thing, but you might think that creating them is a tougher deal. Actually, creating headers and footers is pretty simple in Word, even if you decide to use sections and want to vary the text from page to page. Here is the process:
To insert a header or footer in your document, choose Header And Footer from the View menu. Type your text in the window that appears, and use the Header and Footer tools shown in Table 6-2 to customize the text as needed. Click outside the text area to return to the document.
To remove a header or footer, display it by choosing Header And Footer from the View menu. Click in the item and press Ctrl+A; then press Delete.
To insert a page number in a header or footer, position the cursor and click the Insert Page Number tool. To format the page number, use the Format Page Number tool.

| Insert Number Of Pages | Displays at the cursor position the total number of pages |
| Format Page Number | Displays the Page Number Format dialog box so that you can enter page-numbering options |
| Insert Date | Inserts the current date in the form MM/DD/YYYY |

| Show/Hide Document Text | Alternately hides and displays document text |
| Same As Previous | Makes the selected header or footer the same as the previous one |
| Switch Between Header And Footer | Moves the display from the header to the footer and back again |
| Show Previous | If the header is selected, jumps to the previous header; if the footer is selected, jumps to previous footer |
| Show Next | If the header is selected, jumps to the next header; if the footer is selected, jumps to next footer |
| Close | Closes the Header and Footer toolbar |
You can create multiline headers and footers by pressing Enter at the end of the first line. This gives you room for more text. To see how the page will look when printed (headers, footers, and all), click the Print Preview tool on the Standard toolbar.
