In the last chapter, you learned how easy it is to add pictures, WordArt, AutoShapes, and more to your Web pages. Other special items you might want to add are the graphical lines and boxes. Lines can help you show readers where one section begins and another ends on your Web page; borders can draw visitors attention to an important point that you don t want them to miss .
The fastest and easiest way to add a dividing line to your Web page is to choose Horizontal Line from the Insert menu. FrontPage adds a line at the cursor position. You can change the look, width, color , and alignment of the line by right-clicking the line, and choosing Horizontal Line Properties. Set your choices in the Horizontal Line Properties dialog box (see Figure 20-4) and click OK to save the changes.
If you want to add your own line quickly, click the Line tool in the Drawing toolbar. To keep the line straight, press and hold Shift while you draw the line. To change the color and style of the line, use the Line Color and Line Style tools on the Drawing toolbar.
Note | Remember that when it comes to adding design elements such as lines and borders, a little goes a long way. Because your ultimate objective is to create a site that is easy to navigate and fun to read (or at least informative), you don t want to make things more difficult for your readers by littering the page with unnecessary lines and boxes. Use these items sparingly and they ll be more effective. When in doubt, do without. |
With that in mind, here s how to add a border to items on your current page:
Select the text or object around which you want to draw the border.
Click the Border down arrow on the Formatting toolbar. A palette of border options appears.
Click the border style you want, and it s applied to the selected area.
If you don t like a border once you ve added it, press Ctrl+Z to undo your changes. Instead of doing away with the border altogether, however, you might want to experiment with other border styles to see whether there s something you like better. In addition, you can add shading to a selected area of your page by choosing Borders And Shading from the Format menu, and clicking the Shading tab. Click the Background color down arrow, and choose the color you want. Click OK to close the dialog box and return to your Web page.
