Controlling Slide Display

If you ve set up your presentation to advance automatically from slide to slide, you must specify the amount of time you want each slide to be displayed. By default, PowerPoint sets up your presentation so that the slides will advance only when you click the mouse, press Enter, or the right or down arrow key. You can change this in the Slide Transition task pane by choosing to advance your slides automatically. Follow these steps to advance your slides automatically and specify the length of time each slide is displayed:

  1. Set any transition and sound effects for the current slide.

  2. In the Advance Slide area of the Slide Transition task pane, click the Automatically After check box. The timing 00:00 appears in the box beneath the option.

Aha! ”Using Both Manual and Automatic Advance

You can choose to leave both options selected in the Slide Transition task pane so that users have a choice of clicking to advance the slide, or waiting for the timing to play out. If you want viewers to just relax and watch, disable the On Mouse Click option so that the slide will not advance when someone clicks the mouse button.

  3. Use the arrow to increase the time, or click in the box and type a new value. After you click outside the slide, the timing value will be displayed beneath the slide.

Aha! ”Using Apply To All Slides

Because clicking the Apply To All Slides tool applies all the transition effects to all the slides in your presentation, you need to use this tool carefully . If you want to apply the same timing to all the slides, but you want to set individual transitions and sound effects, set the Advance Slide settings first, and then click Apply To All Slides. This will apply the same time to all slides (you ll see the small time indicator under the lower left corner of each slide in Slide Sorter view). Then you can go back and set transitions and sounds (and modify individual timings, if needed) without losing the unique effects of each slide.
