COSTS OF THE IT RECRUITMENT CRISIS

The continuing crisis of recruiting IT staff is not new. In the past, there have been numerous studies showing that the lack of skilled IT staff has had significant and negative impact on the U.S. economy. For example, in 1999, the Computing Technology Industry Association, a nonprofit organization, released a report that indicates the IT service and support personnel shortage costs to the U.S. economy in spending on salaries and training a total of $105.5 billion annually. The association's study, "Crisis in IT Service and Support," analyzed data from the government as well as participating companies. The study also found that about 10 percent of IT service and support jobs, or 268,740 positions at that time, remained unfilled, costing U.S. companies $4.5 billion a year in lost worker productivity due to unresolved technical issues.[2]
