The structure of the U.S. economy is extremely diverse and involves the complex interaction of many factors, trends, and economic sectors. This diversity and complexity has resulted in one of the most advanced economies in the world, which has led the way in the development of new technologies. The United States is by far the world's economic superpower—our GDP totaled $10.2 trillion in 2001; assuming international purchasing power parity, this was three times the size of Japan's output, almost five times the size of Germany's and more than seven times the size of the United Kingdom's.[3]

Venture capital activity is beneficial to small enterprise because it provides a source of long-term capital investment. Any increase in venture capital investment is beneficial to small businesses, as it provides another source of financing. A rise in venture capital financing is also indicates increased innovation and entrepreneurship. This money can be made available to purchase new types of technology and services.

As the economy in the 21st century evolves, small business entrepreneurs are now armed with an aggressive IT tools and technology to meet new challenges head-on. Many agree that while the challenges facing small business have changed over the past few years, the long-term view is very optimistic, this despite concerns about the economy. Small business entrepreneurs frequently go on to be heroes of American society. Small businesses also can become larger and bigger businesses.

A vital part of this future will involve what IT technology is used and purchased. The tools that provide the maximum productivity, ease of use, and capacity will have substantial markets in the small business sector.

This chapter illustrates the far-reaching effect that autonomic computing can grow to. While the initial autonomic computing thrust is for corporate IT environment, there are other markets and products that can benefit from the self-managing software systems.
