So far, we have discussed the overall picture of autonomic computing and its component parts. In this chapter, we will define how autonomic computing systems might be built, and the architectures needed for implementation and success. While at this time the detailed autonomic architecture are still evolving and under development, we can still review the necessary elements and describe a framework of the most important aspects of the architecture.

Specifically, an IT architecture defines the components, or building blocks, that make up the overall information system. It provides an environment from which products can be procured and systems developed that will work together to implement the overall systems for today's corporations. It thus enables the management of IT investment in a way that meets the needs of the corporation.

An effective IT architecture is critical to business survival and success, and is the indispensable means to achieving competitive advantage through IT. Today's CIOs are aware that the effective management and exploitation of information through IT is the key to business success. An IT architecture addresses this need, by providing a strategic context for the evolution of the IT system in response to the constantly changing needs of the business environment. It is the very foundation on which the systems and applications are built.
