The backup and recovery utilities supplied with DB2 are wonderfully complex. They remove much of the burden of database recovery from the DBA or analyst and place it where it belongs: squarely on the shoulders of the DBMS.

Ten forms of backup and recovery are provided by nine DB2 utilities. The following list describes each form of backup and recovery along with the associated DB2 utility for each:

  • Backup of all data in a table space, partition, or index ( COPY utility)

  • Incremental backup of table space data ( COPY utility)

  • Analyze a table space to determine if a full or incremental backup is required ( COPY utility)

  • Make a copy of an existing backup copy ( COPYTOCOPY utility)

  • Merge incremental copies ( MERGECOPY utility)

  • Full recovery of table space or index data based on the image copy and the log data ( RECOVER utility)

  • Restoration of a table space or index to an image copy or point in time, referred to hereafter as a partial recovery ( RECOVER utility)

  • Re-creation of DB2 indexes from table space data ( REBUILD utility)

  • Record a point of consistency for a table space or a set of table spaces ( QUIESCE utility)

  • Repair of damaged data ( REPAIR utility)

  • Report currently available recovery data ( REPORT RECOVERY utility)

  • Backup and restoration of the entire system ( BACKUP SYSTEM and RESTORE SYSTEM )
