Section 13.9. Summary

13.9. Summary

  • It took some time to find a suitable area for writing the first Fit tables for the application.

  • Emily and Don experienced working together, with some guidance, to develop tables step by step.

  • When things seemed too complex, they tackled a part of the problem and evolved a simple table from there.

  • It wasn't immediately obvious how to represent the business rule or even what the rule should be. The tables helped clarify what's needed, getting to its essence.

Emily and Don seemed to enjoy their experience. Here are some general characteristics that can help in choosing an early area for developing Fit tests:

  • A part that needs attention because of past or current problems with errors

  • Simple and clear business rules, with someone available to clarify any issues that may arise

  • No tests or manual or automated tests that are difficult to read, too dependent on other tests, or are no longer valid

  • People who are familiar with the business and with testing and are eager to participate and have time and support of management to do so

Having bright, enthusiastic, and respected people move first into the use of new tools and practices is essential. If they have a good experience, they'll soon be able to support and encourage others.
