Contributors and Technical Editors

Mark Edward Soper is president of Select Systems and Associates, Inc., a technical writing and training organization. Mark is a 23-year veteran of the technology field, with an extensive background in training, technical book and magazine writing, technical editing, online content development, and research.

Mark first began to work with PCs in the days of the original IBM PC, PC-XT, and PC compatibles. Mark provided sales, sales support, and technical training for these computers, as well as for Atari, TI, Commodore 64, and CP/M-based systems for various retailers in Evansville, Indiana, from 1983 to 1989. Mark found the early editions of Scott Mueller's Upgrading and Repairing PCs a great help in both developing technical expertise and in seeing the potential to reach a larger audience by sharing that expertise in print.

In late 1998, Mark contacted Scott Mueller, dean of computer hardware authors, and began a long association that has crossed over to multiple titles in the Upgrading and Repairing series. Mark has assisted Scott with Upgrading and Repairing PCs since the 11th edition and has contributed to Upgrading and Repairing Networks, 2nd edition and Upgrading and Repairing Laptops. Mark has coauthored Upgrading and Repairing Servers; Upgrading and Repairing Networks, 5th edition; Upgrading and Repairing PCs: Technician's Portable Reference (1st and 2nd editions); Upgrading and Repairing PCs: Field Guide (the latest version of the Technician's Portable Reference); and Upgrading and Repairing PCs: A+ Certification Study Guide, 2nd edition. Mark also assists Scott with www.upgradingandrepairingpcs.com, the official website for the book series.

Mark has also authored the Complete Idiot's Guide to High-Speed Internet Connections, the Absolute Beginner's Guide to Cable Internet Connections, TechTV's Upgrading Your PC (1st and 2nd editions, with Patrick Norton), PC Help Desk in a Book, Absolute Beginner's Guide to A+ Certification, Easy Digital Cameras, the Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Networking, the Absolute Beginner's Guide to Home Automation, and Leo Laporte's PC Help Desk.

Mark has been a contributor to several books in Que's Using Windows series, including Special Edition Using Windows Millennium, Special Edition Using Windows XP Home, Special Edition Using Windows XP Professional, and Windows XP Platinum Edition.

Will Schmied is an Active Directory architect and business applications analyst at a Fortune 100 shipping company. As a freelance writer, Will has worked with many publishers, including Pearson and Microsoft. Will has also worked directly with Microsoft in the MCSE exam-development process and is the founder of the popular MCSE certification portal www.mcseworld.com.

Will currently resides in the southern United States with his wife, Chris; their children, Christopher, Austin, Andrea, and Hannah; their dog, Charlie; and their cats, Smokey, Evin, and Socks. When he's not busy working, you can find Will enjoying time with his family or cheering on his favorite ice hockey team.

Mark Reddin (MCSE, A+) has been the primary technical editor on Upgrading and Repairing PCs for three editions. As is the case with many technology professionals, what began as a hobby for him became the foundation for a career. He started tinkering with computers during the time of the early Commodore and Atari systems (with all those wonderful games). Exposure to the budding IT world while attending Ball State University led him to a serious exploration of computer and network technologies. Since that time, he has been involved in the industry in many capacities, ranging from a system support and repair specialist to owning and operating an independent reseller corporation. Mark has also been involved with numerous Que publications over the last several years, providing development and technical verification. He currently develops Exam Cram titles for Pearson Education.
